Details

Children 5 and up who are reluctant or new readers read one-on-one to a friendly therapy dog for a 20-minute session, in partnership with Therapy Dogs of Tenafly.

Read to Dogs is for reluctant and emerging readers. Held in cooperation with Therapy Dogs of Tenafly, each child reads one-on-one to a dog and trainer team for a 20-minute session.

Learning to read is often about overcoming fears, and dogs make ideal reading companions: they help kids relax, listen attentively, never laugh or criticize, let children go at their own pace, and are less intimidating than peers.

Registration is required for each 20-minute slot. The program is popular, so the library asks families to register no more than twice a month. It runs on select Mondays during the school year.
